Ducting a Basement Miner Without Stealing Bathroom Air
Shared ventilation stacks in older Korean buildings create intake mistakes that amplify noise complaints.

Basement utility rooms tempt miners with distance from bedrooms. In pre-2000 apartment blocks across Seoul, however, that same room often shares a duct path with bathroom exhaust on upper floors.
The Cross-Stack Problem
Pulling intake air from a shared stack means you ingest moist, turbulent flow whenever neighbours shower. Fans compensate by spinning faster — which sounds like your miner “got louder” at predictable evening hours. We document this pattern in roughly one of five basement assessments.
Separating Intake and Exhaust
Where building rules allow, we route intake from a dedicated wall grille and exhaust through an existing utility vent capped for one-way flow. The miner should not inhale from the bathroom stack even if the grille is convenient.
Material Choices in Humid Basements
Corrugated aluminium flex duct works for short runs. Longer paths need rigid PVC with smooth bends; every ninety-degree elbow costs roughly 1–2 dB of effective fan headroom. In humid summers, uninsulated flex sweats and drips onto miners.
When Management Says No Exterior Penetration
Some managements prohibit new wall grilles. Options narrow to recirculating enclosures with charcoal pre-filters — higher cost, lower hash stability. We quote these honestly rather than promising silent operation inside a sealed box.
Measuring Success
After routing, we re-measure at the nearest bedroom slab and at the bathroom vent outlet on the floor above. Matching or beating pre-installation readings at both points is our pass criteria.
